About Designer
Phillip Lim was born in Thailand in 1973 to Chinese immigrants. His father hails from Hunan, while his mother is from Canton. Fleeing Cambodia's civil war, his parents settled in Southern California, where his mother found work as a seamstress and his father pursued a career as a professional poker player. Although his mother's influence shaped his ethos, Lim initially had no aspirations of becoming a designer.
Lim enrolled in California State University of Long Beach to study finance for three years. However, he soon realized that he was in the wrong field and made the switch to pursue a degree in home economics. It was during his time working at Barneys in Beverly Hills, where he was unpacking boxes as a weekend job, that Lim stumbled upon the name of a designer named Katayone Adeli. This discovery led to a career epiphany for Lim, who decided to contact Adeli's office and inquire about working for her.
Despite his lack of knowledge about portfolios, Lim managed to secure an internship with Adeli and eventually earned a position on her design team through his innate talent and determination. When Adeli relocated to New York, Lim chose to remain in the Los Angeles area and co-founded his first label, Development. After spending four years at Development, Lim, at the age of 31, departed to embark on his most personal venture to date, partnering with his friend Wen Zhou to launch his eponymous brand. This move required him to relocate to New York, where he currently resides and works in Soho.
In the fall of 2005, Phillip Lim debuted his brand, 3.1 Phillip Lim, defying the ostentatious runway trends of the time. His line of elegantly youthful wardrobe classics with a twist immediately captivated critics, fashion editors, and customers alike. Lim's talent was widely recognized, and he received numerous accolades, including the 2006 Fashion Group International Women's Designer 'Rising Star' Award, the 2007 CFDA Swarovski Award in Womenswear, the 2012 CFDA Swarovski Award in Menswear, and the 2013 CFDA Award for Accessories Designer of the Year.
After nearly a decade, Lim currently serves as the creative director and co-founder of 3.1 Phillip Lim, leading a pioneering contemporary brand that encompasses women's and men's fashion, accessories, and shoes. His remarkable talent and success have firmly established him as one of the most accomplished and celebrated young designers in the industry today.
