The California Fashion Association (CFA) came into existence in 1995 as a non-profit public benefit 501(c)(6) Corporation. Over the course of two decades, the CFA has served as the leading association for the apparel and textile community.
The formation of the CFA stemmed from the Fashion Industry Round Table, which was convened by then Mayor Richard Riordan. The purpose of the meeting was to address the pressing issues surrounding labor law violations, notably the infamous 'El Monte Sweatshop' incident. Recognizing the need for a unified voice, the participants agreed to establish an industry organization that could effectively communicate with the media, gather vital statistics and data, and collaborate with city, state, and federal authorities in their investigation of the incident on behalf of the wider apparel and textile industry.
Ilse Metchek, who was the General Manager of the California Mart at the time, was appointed as the temporary Executive Director of the newly formed California Fashion Association. Concurrently, Lonnie Kane, the President and owner of Karen Kane Corporation, a manufacturing firm, volunteered to assume the role of Chairman.
Since its inception, the CFA has evolved into a multifaceted association, addressing a wide range of significant issues affecting the apparel and textile industry in California. Ms. Metchek, who initially served as the General Manager, has since assumed the Presidency of the California Fashion Association. Under her leadership, the association has expanded its corporate memberships and forged partnerships with allied associations on a global scale. Mr. Kane continues to serve as Chairman, and his contributions have been invaluable to the industry's progress and development.
In 1999, the California Fashion Foundation was established as the fundraising arm of the CFA, emerging "from the heart of the CFA." This non-profit (C-3) public benefit program organizes annual events and fundraising initiatives to support scholarships and other charitable endeavors aligned with the fashion industry.
Over the years, the CFA has played a pivotal role in fostering collaboration, advocating for industry interests, and addressing challenges faced by the apparel and textile sector in California. Through its various initiatives, the association has contributed to the growth and development of the industry, while also championing ethical practices, sustainability, and innovation.
One of the core activities of the CFA is facilitating dialogue and knowledge-sharing among industry stakeholders. The association hosts conferences, seminars, and workshops where experts, professionals, and entrepreneurs converge to exchange insights, discuss emerging trends, and explore opportunities for collaboration. These events provide a platform for networking, fostering partnerships, and staying abreast of the latest developments in the dynamic world of fashion.
Additionally, the CFA actively engages with government entities and regulatory bodies to shape policies and regulations that have a direct impact on the industry. By advocating for the interests of its members, the association strives to create a favorable business environment, ensuring that the apparel and textile sector can thrive and remain competitive in the global market.
The CFA also places a strong emphasis on education and talent development. Through its scholarship programs, the California Fashion Foundation supports aspiring fashion students, providing them with the financial resources needed to pursue their education and launch their careers in the industry. These scholarships not only empower individuals but also contribute to the overall growth and vibrancy of the fashion community in California.
In an era marked by increased awareness of sustainability and responsible practices, the CFA actively promotes eco-conscious initiatives within the industry. By encouraging sustainable sourcing, ethical production, and responsible consumption, the association aims to reduce the environmental footprint of the apparel and textile sector and foster a more sustainable future.
